Florida

Post by Cono »

I sure am glad I don't live in Florida. First, it was the gators. Now, it's the sturgeon.

Them be real good eating. Used gill nets as a youngster on the Ogeechee River near Savannah Georgia. Firm white meat kind of like a pork chop. Damn things date way back to the stone age. Looks like it's that old.

I live in Florida, right on Tampa Bay. I don't recall having ever heard of "killer" sturgeon, but I heard that we're having another record year here for shark attacks!

I vaguely remember having some "killer" cocktails in St. Petersburg Harshat, and also getting forcibly removed (in the politest possible way) from the bar on the pier there, but never any sturgeon.
Closest I came to a shark attack in St. Pete was a british girl from the Detroit Hotel running away with my clothes when we were all skinny dipping there one night.
And then hooking up with a blonde barmaid who had a twin sister.... (Through misfortune/mismanagement I ended up sleeping on the couch).
I had a great time in St. Pete, but was dumb enough to leave it all behind to go to Venezuela, where the scumbags shot at me for just being there...

Trevor, I used to catch garfish off the rocks where I grew up, but much smaller, just over a foot long. Are they the same long thin ones, with a long snout full of sharp teeth?

Where I went scuba at Ginnie Springs (Sante Fe river?) in Florida, there were some nice size alligator gar in the river. Well over a foot long. There were a couple of fresh-water eel in the ballroom (underground cavern) but I didn't see anything between Devil's eye and Devil's ear when I was cave diving.

I'll have to browse through my underwater pics to see if I still have any pics of the alligator gar. Yeah Fuelpump, long and skinny...but never got up close and personal with one to check their teeth out.

Yeah - Fuelpump - Club Detroit was quiet the place - too bad it's no longer a bar. It's a crappy resturant, although Janis Landing is still in business for a good concert. As for killer cocktails, we still have those, but somethings are gone like the Hotel. I'm not sure if the Green Iguana still sells the famous 32oz Long Island Ice Tea, if not it's a shame. I got my girlfriend (now my wife :)) totally wrecked on one of those long ago.

Yes they are Long and not so skinny once they hit around 5 FT the 7 foot one I caught had a snout that was rounded (like a alligator) and his mouth is full...I mean full of rows of razor like teeth...they truely are dinosaurs.... you can catch the 4ft and under in cast nets but the big boys I catch on really strong line...with shark hooks and a steel shank around the line that connects to the hook so his razor teeth dont bite through the line...drag them close to the boat and get them ontop of the water...then I put a .40 round right between the eyes....

How big do you thing this one is?
