If it's half as good as the book, then it will be outstanding.
I read the book 2-3 years ago and has to be one of the most powerful and meaningful books that I've ever read. The accounts of the battle for Iwo were obviously quite intense, but the associated story of how these individuals were affected throughout the remainder of their lives was equally intense.
If you think you'd have any inclination to read the actual book...I'd do the book first as I've never seen a movie do a story like that justice (IMHO).

That was some tough fighting! I don't think those marines ever got as much credit as they probably deserved. All that island hopping under fire must have been hell, it would have been worse if the Japs hadn't surrendered when they did. A full scale invasion of Japan would have been bad news for everyone. It'd be great to see the movie.
