From what I've been able to find out in print, he was hit in the center of his chest, which pierced his heart. Appears he pulled the thing out of his chest and that's when he keeled over.

Damn,

Have been away from the TV/Internet for a few days and just saw the news this morning on CNN. Figured it was bound to happen someday, but not like that.

I actually had a chance to meet Steve and Terri Irwin back in 2001. They were among a group of local VIP's/media that we flew out to the Constellation prior to pulling into Sydney Harbor for a port visit. The guy was as excited and outgoing in real life as he appeared on TV...his animated personality was definitely not an act. He spent the better part of 20 minutes chatting with the crew and asking all about the aircraft. He actually ask us for a picture before we had a chance to ask him, lol.

Can't say that I was that impressed in later years with him feeding crocs and handling snakes with his infant son in his arms, but that notwithstanding, you have to respect someone who was that excited and passionate about what they do.

As an Aussie, I thought the guy was a little bit of a buffoon at times, but I give him absolute credit for having the enthusiasm and intestinal fortitude to do what he was passionate about. The kids loved him, and he got plenty of international recognition for what he did.
It was a huge shock when I heard on the radio that he had died suddenly.

Then something like 2 days later, we had another tragic death here. When we think of motorsport in Australia, the name "Peter Brock" is usually the first name that comes to mind. He wrapped himself around a tree in the Targa Rally here in Western Australia, died instantly. Another huge shock to the country. Two in one week. Peter Brock was not very well known outside of Australia, but he was huge here, and well respected by everyone as a superb driver and an all around class act.

Two guys who lived comfortably with danger, and seemed invincible, until they both ran out of luck.

Ooouuuuccchhh!!

As an avid surfer, I'm around the ocean/beach all the time. I once stepped on a stingray, and got the barb in the leg, it really hurt becase of the poison! I can't imagine getting one in the chest.

This kind a freak accident really proves that anything can happen to anyone!

BTW - I wonder how many people die from stingrays? It can't be much.

Straight into his chest, the poison would have gone pretty much straight to his heart, and then it's all over.
Plenty of people get stung by stingrays, but I guess if you get it in an extremity, the poison would take a while to work through the capillaries into the rest of the body. Straight to the heart would mean a pretty concentrated dose right where it counts.
